Artichoke seeds are suitable for gardeners seeking a low-maintenance, perennial vegetable that regrows annually, increasing in size and productivity each year. Typically, the plant produces its first harvest in the second year after planting, with larger yields expected subsequently. Suitable for vegetable gardens, edible landscapes, or ornamental purposes, this plant is ideal for garden enthusiasts interested in unique, perennial edible plants. It can be grown in well-drained, fertile soil and benefits from regular watering during the growing season.

  • Germination period: approximately 14-21 days
  • Plant height: up to 4 feet (1.2 meters)
  • Spread: about 3 feet (0.9 meters) wide
  • Zone compatibility: USDA zones 7-11
  • Produces vibrant purple flower buds and edible foliage
  • Requires full sun with at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily

Use cases for Violet Star Artichoke include edible landscaping, perennial vegetable cultivation, or ornamental gardens emphasizing stunning purple blooms. It is ideal for home gardeners, landscape designers, or anyone on a budget seeking a durable, low-maintenance perennial plant that provides both visual appeal and edible harvests over multiple seasons. The plant's perennial nature reduces the need for replanting annually, making it a cost-effective choice for long-term garden planning.

Violet Star Artichoke seeds require minimal care once established. They benefit from regular watering during dry periods, periodic fertilization with a balanced fertilizer, and mulching to conserve moisture. The plant is hardy and can be left in the ground year-round in suitable climates. It is recommended to harvest flower buds when they reach full size, just before opening, for optimal flavor. A protective layer of organic mulch can help retain soil moisture and suppress weeds. No specific pruning is necessary, but removing spent flower heads encourages further blooming. The plant is durable and can be propagated via seed for new plants, which should be started indoors in colder zones or direct sowed after soil warms in warmer regions.

    Safe Seed Pledge

    OUR PLEDGE TO YOU

Agriculture and seeds provide the basis upon which our lives depend. We must protect this foundation as a safe and genetically stable source for future generations.

For the benefit of all farmers, gardeners and consumers who want an alternative. We pledge to you that we do not knowingly buy or sell genetically engineered seeds or plants.  The mechanical transfer of genetic material outside of natural reproductive methods and between genera, families or kingdoms, poses great biological risks as well as economic, political, and cultural threats.

We wish to support agricultural progress that leads to healthier soils, genetically diverse agricultural ecosystems and ultimately healthy people and communities.

We do not buy - OR - grow any seed from large corporations that make Genetically Engineered seeds.  We don't touch that stuff and we never will.

The seeds we offer aren't like varieties you'd typically find at a garden center.

Every variety we offer is 100% OP (open-pollinated).  Open-pollination means that you can safely save the seed after harvest and preserve a collection of heirloom seed for many generations to come.

To make it perfectly clear ... Our seeds do not contain any exogenously inserted embryogenesis deactivator genes caused by human intervention.
